Papa-moscas-azul-de-Sulawesi/ Sulawesi blue Flycatcher( Cyornis omissus omissus)

I love this little gang of old world flycatchers!
They are usually colorful and their calm posture while waiting for their small prey, insects in general, is very characteristic.
They live in the middle extract of forests and green areas, solitary, in pairs or accompanying mixed flocks.
It inhabits the islands of Sulawesi, Togian and Selayar in Indonesia.
Its reproduction seems to need more field studies.
This small acrylic illustration depicts the difference between the male and female of the spp, omissus, as this species has other spps, which I will portray later.

A conspicuous Bulbul from the island of Borneo.
Flashy and colorful, it tends to elevate the small crest when excited by something.
His vocalization is little known and the recording above was the best I could find (it's the thinnest voice in the recording) It feeds on fruits and insects that it collects, flitting vividly among the trees.
Known only for this beautiful island, home to amazing species and with the oldest forest on the planet!!!
Their nest was seen once in January and consisted of two small eggs.
In this A4 illustration I portrayed the common coloring of both sexes and an individual, in a small watercolor fed on drooping fruits, typical of their region.

Cuco-Canoro/Common Cuckoo (Cuculus canorus)

 -Cuco! Cuco!

O som ecoa forte pelas florestas e campos onde vive nosso tão conhecido Cuco!!

-Cuckoo! Cuckoo!

The sound echoes loudly through the forests and fields where our well-known Cuckoo lives !

Used in clocks that decorate walls around the world, this migratory bird can be found from Europe to other continents, depending on the year, such as Asia and Africa !!!

It feeds on insects, larvae and some fruits. It also feeds on eggs and small baby birds.

Its most impressive feature is that it is a parasite, that is, it lays its eggs in nests of other species so that they hatch and raise their young. Reaching the extreme of females laying eggs with patterns of color and size similar to the species where she will lay the eggs (and probably the same species that raised her)!

The baby cuckoo is born faster and kills or throws its half-siblings out of the nest to have the parents' attention all to themselves.

This behavior exists in other species of the Cuculidae family and in other bird families.

In this A4 size watercolor I represented a singing male (females have a small brownish color on the sides of the neck) in their typical pose and in detail the chick being fed by a Common Reed Warbler.

Monarca-azul/ Black-naped Monarch (Hypothymis azurea)

A resident of the Malay Peninsula, the Black-caped Monarch attracts attention with its beautiful blue color.
It inhabits the beautiful forests of the region, it seems to prefer the presence of bamboo.
A migrant, he reaches India, China and even Iran.
It feeds on insects. Fly from the landing to catch insects in mid-flight or fly in front of leaves to disturb the insects and get them out of hiding.
On this board I portrayed the couple, who can always be seen together, next to the nest with two newborn chicks.
It was very pleasant to illustrate another species of bird from this magical region of Southeast Asia, of which I am a fan !!!

Pisco-de-pescoço-branco, White-throated-robin (Irania gutturalis)

It inhabits a vast region, stretching from Turkey, Afghanistan, Iran, Armenia, etc., (West Asia), where it breeds and migrates to East Africa, where it spends the winter. He is also a migrant in Europe.

Its most common food is insects, but it also feeds on fruit in the fall.

It is interesting to mention that the name of its genus, Irania, comes from Iran, where the type for the description of the White-necked Robin was collected.

His voice is very pleasant and fills the dry fields where he lives. Sings sometimes in flight.

In Africa, it lives in the forests of Acácias and in fields up to 1600 meters high. Classified as a species of little concern in its conservation status, which means that it does not suffer from major threats.

In this illustration, I tried to portray a male (the females are lighter) perched on top of a rock, in a very typical pose, having in the background a landscape of the Caucasus Mountains, a magical region for the beauty of landscapes and for all the fauna and flora with make up.

For me, this bird of the Muscicapidae family, which is the flycatcher of the old world, is very reminiscent of our Tiranidae and other families of the new world. Not only in behavior, but also in their vocalizations.

The board I present to you was created in watercolors and I used a little Chinese white to achieve the smoothness of Pisco's coloring. Chinese white gives a more creamy characteristic to watercolors and can be used, in color mixes, as a means to give watercolors opacity, making them closer to gouache.

Bico-Grosso-Verde /Green Broadbill (Calyptomena viridis)

The green beak (Calyptomena viridis), is a small bird in the family Calyptomenidae. It was previously classified in the Eurylaimidae family, a group of closely related members who share the name "big bill".

The bird is about 17 cm long, bright green plumage with a half moon in the earbuds, nails, open beak open to swallow large fruits, round head, short tail and three black bars on each wing. The beak itself is very weak and almost hidden by the ridge above it. Both sexes are similar, with a female paler in color and no dark spots.

It remains motionless in the canopy or just below, flying quickly to a new location, if disturbed. Its color offers excellent camouflage.

It feeds mainly on soft figs. Their eating habits can be distributed as seeds from the forest floor. Due to the large opening of the beak, it is able to swallow bigger fruits, like certain palm trees in the undergrowth; insects are also part of your diet.

The female usually lays two and three whitish eggs.

It is distributed in forests of Borneo, Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula, where frequent lowlands and low-lying forests. (Wikipedia)

In this illustration, I used watercolor and gouache to portray this fantastic species and choose to make the background very clear to highlight its incredible green!

Calau/ Great Hornbill (Buceros Bicornis)

  Vendido/ Sold

A magnificent bird lives in the extensive forests of Vietnam, India, China, Myanmar, Sumatra and Malaysia.
Its large size, about 1 meter, makes it impossible not to notice it while feeding on the giant trees in its environment. It also feeds on insects, small reptiles and mammals and other birds.
despite the beak, it is not related to our toucans, this being a case of convergent evolution, where different species occupy the same ecological niches and end up becoming similar.
The colors of this great hornbill are another attraction. the female has the top of the beak smaller than the male.
This work was all done in acrylics.
I tried to represent the female in the background, next to the hollow where she builds the nest and where it is closed during incubation.
Acrylic os paper.
