Pertencente a incrível família dos Nectariniidae, esse
lindo e metálico Sunbird, vive nas montanhas do Quênia, Congo, Uganda, Zâmbia,
Tanzânia e Malawi.
Encontrado em altitudes elevadas, acima de 1800 metros,
chegando a cerca de 3000 metros no Congo, esse pássaro de cerca de 14 cm,
(macho com retrizes centrais da cauda de cerca de 13 cm) sobrevive em condições
extremas de temperatura, associado a plantas típicas dessas altitudes, como
Lobélias, Senécios e Proteas, sendo sempre visto nas florações dessas espécies.
Seu colorido é espetacular e com certeza deve ser muito
marcante observá-lo em seu ambiente específico.
Alimenta-se de néctar, insetos e pólen.
Não é uma espécie ameaçada.
No display o macho ergue a cauda e o bico, abre as asas,
e infla os tufos escarlates dos flancos.
A fêmea, mais cor de terra, deve ficar impressionada com
tal comportamento e com a beleza das cores do macho!!!
Nessa ilustração, guache e aquarelas, retratei o macho, a
fêmea e uma pequena composição de um macho em uma Lobélia Gigante, típica do
seu ambiente.
Belonging to the incredible family of Nectariniidae, this
beautiful and metallic Sunbird, lives in the mountains of Kenya, Congo, Uganda,
Zambia, Tanzania and Malawi.
Found at high altitudes, above 1800 meters, reaching
about 3000 meters in Congo, this bird of about 14 cm, (male with tail retrices
of about 13 cm) survives in extreme temperature conditions, associated with
typical plants from these altitudes, such as Lobelias , Senecios and Proteas,
being always seen in the blooms of these species.
Its color is spectacular and it must surely be very
remarkable to observe it in its specific environment.
It feeds on nectar, insects and pollen.
It is not an endangered species.
In the display the male raises his tail and beak, spreads
his wings, and inflates the scarlet tufts of the flanks.
The female, more earthy, must be impressed with such
behavior and the beauty of the male's colors !!!

portrayed the male, the female and a small composition of a male in a Giant
Lobelia, typical of its environment.
